Samantha was a student at Starling University, there she studied chemistry, was a member of the drill team and was an active member of the debate team. The chemistry lab often closed before she was finished with a project so she made an agreement with her professor that if she brought ALL materials back the next day, she could take her project home if she needed to.
Our story starts when Samantha begins her latest project “The Consistency of Melted Commercial Products When Brought to a Controlled Temperature” which identifies the safety, strength and durability of many household products including foods and cleaners when brought to the average temperature of a vehicle on a sunny day. This is a project she adored, there was plenty of mess to be found in most of the materials she had gathered. Pine Sol, Duct Tape, Crayons, Hair Gel, Caramel, Silly Putty and her personal favorite treat… Gummy Bears!
She carefully put each item into Ziploc bags and used a double boiler to simulate the direct average heat in a standard sports car for 15 minutes. The Pine Sol simply expanded and sweat, the Duct Tape melted onto itself which created a delightfully sticky game to remove it from the bag. The Crayons melted together with a mix of color, she poured it into an empty vial for later examination. The hair gel sweat itself and separated leaving a strange texture to the gunk. Caramel melted into a creamy soup in which she occasionally dipped her finger to “sample the product for flavor changes” The Silly Putty became a messy bubble gum consistency which stuck to her nails when she touched it. But most interesting were the Gummy Bears… all of the color had mingled together to form an icky off brown… but the taste was still there! The smooth mixing feeling was interrupted occasionally by a mass of not melted bear, she decided to let it “simmer” for a few more moments before she had to leave. It was getting late so Samantha decided to take her project home for further examination. She carefully packed her Ziploc baggies into a paper bag to travel.
Samantha was more than 10 blocks away from her dorm and she often took a bus to get where she needed to go on campus. Today was no different, she got on the bus and took a seat near the middle and put her bags at her feet. Only a few moments had gone by when the driver slammed on the breaks and people braced themselves. Samantha never noticed when she accidentally kicked the paper bag. Inside, the Hair Gel, melted Silly Putty, Caramel and Gummy Bears seeped out of their bags. The Hair Gel softened the paper bag so that it gave and tore under the pressure of its tightly packed contents. Soon the mixture was spilling out on the floor of the bus around her feet. Having worked around the smells all day… she didn’t even notice.
Stop, start, stop and start…. The bus always seemed to take longer than walking… but it was ALWAYS safer. Samantha sighed. Finally… only two blocks left. She began to gather her things and pressed the yellow tape to signal for the next stop. She grabbed for the paper bag and froze in horror…. It was firmly stuck to the floor of the bus. “No way…” she whispered. Samantha looked up as the bus slowed for her stop. She decided she’d walk up to the driver to ask him to stop for a moment…. But she couldn’t move her feet. “Oh, this CAN’T be happening…. Now NOW!” she mumbled desperately. Each foot was firmly stuck to the floor in the warm gooey mess. It cooled and held more firm than before. Samantha sat down and pulled her foot with all of her might but the shoe was firmly attached and she couldn’t walk around barefoot!
A business man sat across from her, he looked amused, crossed his arms and leaned back to watch. The bus stopped for several moments, the bus driver looked up with growing ire at the prank stop, he finally closed the doors and began to drive again. “No, wait! Stop!” she cried but he only looked at her through the mirror and shook his head. She bit her lip. This was not good, not good at all. Desperation filled her and she pulled again with all of her might. The concoction stretched and stretched but never let go of her shoes.
The business man smiled, he leaned forward and said “Looks like you’ve got yourself into a sticky situation there, cutie!”
Samantha’s eyes pleaded with the man and she begged him “Please help, I’ve just missed my stop and I have to get home, if I get off now I can still make it back without having to take another bus. I can…” but she was cut off.
“Why would I want to help you get free?” the man chuckled. “If I did that, I’d miss out on this free entertainment!”
She felt her temper flair, what a jerk! Doesn’t he realize how embarrassing this is??? But she only glared at him. Maybe I just need to try harder… pull harder… So she braced herself against the seat and pushed with all of her might. Strain replaced the pleading in her face. Her eyes closed tight as she pulled on her leg… if I can just get one foot free…. Just one foot…
It started to give!!! The goo must not take well to the bottom of dirty shoes after all! Keep Pulling! But the shoe never let go. Samantha stopped pulling and her foot snapped back down to the floor. The man across from her now had his briefcase on his lap as if he were hiding or protecting something. Her mind didn’t want to wander to WHAT it was…
Taking a deep breath, she examined her shoes. There seemed to be more goo around her right foot than her left… maybe if she could get the left foot free she could use it to brace against the seat to lift her right foot free from the goo. She leaned to the right and pulled again. Sweat beads formed on her forehead and face… but she kept pulling and pulling. Her eyes squinted and her teeth clamped tight. The foot was beginning to give! Little by little the goo snapped off of the shoe, stringy bits were left where it had been but it was coming…. Just a little more, come on Sammy… pull harder… just a little more.
By this time, the man across from her looked a little pink as he watched… a small bit of sweat was forming along his brow and his face seemed in awe of the action.
Samantha pulled as hard as she could with one last feminine grunt and the foot broke free form the mess! What a relief!
She sat back against her seat again with a sigh of relief. One down… one to go… I think I’ll leave the bag… she smiled weakly. Samantha had never felt so exhausted in her entire life.

The other shoe is stuck much worse than this one… will it EVER break free? Will the business man FINISH his buisiness and go about his way or will he stay to watch until the very end? Find out in Samantha's Studies Part 2!
